Due to unforeseen circumstances, our treasured Unimog fire engine "Hans" is for sale.
Hans was retired from the volunteer fire brigade in Rickling, northern Germany, in November 2015. We brought him into the UK in April 2016 after buying him from VK Cars in Belgium.
Hans is registered in the UK with DVLA, and he is HGV plated.
He is in amazing condition those German fire volunteers really love their trucks!
He still has his German emergency service decals, three amber beacons (they were blue originally), and public address system.He has huge Fiamm airhorn that is larger than most truck air horns, and sounds like the QEII coming in to dock!Hans has massive triple DOKA cab, four doors, with seats that's driver and passengers. No seatbelts required due to age of vehicle.There is heaps of handy storage inside the two checker plate aluminium seat boxes, with the original Mercedes Benz tool kit, tyre inflation hose, wheelbrace and metal wheel chocks.The cab has courtesy lights, there is hardwearing dark blue automotive carpet on the floor inside the rear doors, and we have installed large custom made camper type table with sockets for the removable legs let into the cab floor.The table converts into a generously sized double bed. High density luxury foam cut to size supplied to re-cover and upgrade the existing seats.We have also installed JVC CD/radio with Bluetooth, and four 100W marine grade speakers, so you can indeed hear the radio over the sound of the engine when roaring along the dual carriageway!The radio is installed in an overhead custom made console, which has been covered with high quality Veltrim automotive carpet. Console also features an 'eyeball' map reading light and colour changing LCD clock.We will be selling Hans complete with the remaining large batch of Veltrim and TrimFix spray glue to completely finish lining the interior of the cab.Hans has large movable searchlight on the front so you can play at Colditz (or light up your garden path).There are also bright worklights all round the back box.The back box itself has five large roller shutters, internal lights, and has had its fire brigade racking removed.The back box has foldaway ladder to gain access to the roof, which can be walked on.There is an alternative plug-in point for the searchlight at the rear of the roof.There are foldaway steps on both sides to permit easy access to the side roller shutter doors.Hans has 12V electrical system.Rear cab heating is 3.8KW Eberspacher heater matrix plumbed directly into the engine. We can supply Webasto hydronic heater to go with it if required (this would mean you could have independent heat in the cab without the engine running, and that you could pre-heat your engine and cab on cold mornings!)Consumer unit fitted but not connected.Mains inlet fitted but not connected.USB charging point fitted and working.Will come with red blinds for side cab windows.Cab roof insulation fitted.Hans has fast axles, so can do 60-65mph on motorway run.8-speed forward and back gearbox.2-wheel drive, 4-wheel drive and diff locks.Air over hydraulic brakes.Exhaust brake.Tyres are NPT 81 Continentals, excellent condition, still have their "whiskers". Comes with spare wheel and tyre.Tow hitch.PTO driven water pump on front bumper.Hydraulic connections at front.Three brand new batteries (one engine battery, two leisure batteries). Leisure batteries in brand new locking checker plate aluminium box.Full length wide checker plate aluminium side steps/running boards on both sides, practical and roomy.90 litre diesel tank.Two new rear shock absorbers (fitted last September).New rear handbrake spring chamber (fitted last September).New pneumatic gear change selector cylinder.Bad points/faults:
Like most vehicles this age, Hans has had few attacks from the rust monster. The driver and passenger footwells were the parts most badly hit. We have removed the rusted metal, treated the remaining original metal, and riveted/Sikaflexed new plates in place.
There are small rust spots on the rear corners of the back box where the original paint has cracked up around the rear lights, and we have recently treated and filled some rust attack under the amber beacons on the cab roof.Otherwise the metal construction overall is very, very sound.
There is some water damage to the plywood floor of the rear part of the cab, where fire crew have dumped wet equipment into the seat box over the years. We have fixed piece of sound ply over the worst bit for the time being, but the whole floor would be simple to replace if required.
The driver's door locks from the inside but not from the outside needs new lock (£30-odd from Atkinson Vos).
The only other fault that we are aware of is hole in the rearmost section of the exhaust.
The headlights are European left-hand drive beam pattern we tried various different lenses etc but had to settle for stick-on beam deflectors which is sufficient for the plating test.

NB: As he stands, Hans will test in June as an HGV. If he is fitted out as camper/motorhome, he will NOT need to be plated and will be able to be MOTd as Class - i.e. normal car!
