Anyone who has ever had classic camper will know the joy it gives and the sadness when the day comes to sell it on, but sad as it is know it will give joy to someone else for years to come.
We have owned this beautiful camper for years after owning VW T2 before that. can honestly say that the classic Toyota is better van for few reasons, number one its more reliable (never broke down on me, even on ridiculously steep road in the lake district), number two its compact for the driveway being SWB and well designed inside with all the equipment you neednumber three its rare old thing that makes it kind of special (it gets lot of comments, mainly from old men saying.. remember those used to have one, best van ever owned).
There is lot of info can pass on about this van so I'll do my best to describe its condition and its features. Of course if you can then please come and have look and take it for test drive to see for yourself. I'm happy to answer your questions and provide more pictures of specific areas if needed.
To start off with here's bit of history, I have the very first Toyota garage service receipt at 5000 miles!, after that there is history of regular services from Toyota all the way up to 1999 with receipts and the service book all stamped up to its last service now due at 100K miles which it has not quite reached yet....currently at 97223 after our last trip to Cornwall :)From 1999 to 2009 have more service receipts carried out every months at an independent garage in Devon. have the original owners manual with vehicle identity card, and I'll throw in my Haynes manual too, always handy for those small jobs.
When purchased the van years ago it was in need of some TLC on the engine which had done straight away, it now runs beautifully and this summer it started first turn of the key after being parked up for the winter. Amazing Japanese engineering, this is the 1.6 12R engine with speed gearbox converted some time ago for unleaded fuel. The work had done included the following: Valves reseated, Cylinder head resurfaced and all new gaskets on the head and inlet manifold, Radiator has been rebuilt including new hoses.Engine tuned (timing, plugs, leads, distributer cap, points etc) including some smaller items such as new fuel line and filters
I have the receipts for the work done while have owned the van.
I have had to get some welding done mainly underneath for the last few MOT's so it does have some corrosion creeping up on it but fair enough think for 37 year old vehicle, it is actually in very good order considering its age. previous owner has had go at some bodywork on the nearside rear arch where there has been scrape at some point leaving small dent to the sliding door. It is not the best job must say but haven't bothered to do anything with it because it's passable as it is. The rain gutters are getting corroded and there are few patches here and there on the bodywork but other than the dent mentioned its straight van. There is very slight oil leak from the rear diff but had it topped up recently so it didn't run dry. The tyres are all in good order, recently had the hydraulic fluid refreshed and brakes bled by local garage to ensure there was no air in the system.
Inside there is wear and tear of course but the main thing is that it is all still the original Devon conversion which is nice to see. Everything works, the sink has 12V water pump and there is water tank fitted, there is leisure battery and 240V kit fitted including 12-240V converter if you get stuck without hookup. The fridge is 12V or gas (not 240V), always run it on gas when we're camping and 12V while driving. It runs perfectly and this summer it was running on gas for two weeks on the same bottle, which is still half full so it doesn't use much. The top pops up and upstairs there is another bed for the kids or someone willing to climb up! We just use this space for storage of bedding during the day when we are camping.Downstairs there is rock and roll style bed which is very comfortable and easy to put up and down. There is detachable dining table and gas cooker with two hobs and grill. There are few cupboards for clothes and cooking implements and storage under the seats. In the front the seats are actually really comfy much better than some modern cars, and there is an original old radio (AM/LW) which adds to the nostalgia. It has column shift gears and an efficient heater (unlike the VW).
It is ready to go camping and you could drive this away and do nothing to it, however if you wanted to then there are few areas that could be tidied up. think it would make great lightweight project for someone who would like to take this old van back to its former glory. know how hard it is to find van that's not either major project or already fully restored with hefty price tag, so this is an ideal van for someone who likes to tinker bit in between road trips.
It's next MOT is 07/05/2020 and the road tax from memory is around £230 for the year although believe when it reaches its 40th birthday it becomes tax exempt so not long to go.
I have an awning which will put into the sale (see pictures), very useful for wet days, and full cover for the winter months which will also go into the sale along with the electric hookup cable, levelling ramps (wedge shaped things) and waste water bottle.
This really is nice van that will keep running for years to come if someone is willing to look after it. I have set reserve because it is rare and original example cant let it go if it doesn't reach this, I'll just keep it for next summer :)
In case you were wondering I'm selling because we need another car in the family now and with my sensible (boring) hat on it's probably best to let it go if the right buyer comes along.
