1973 VW T2Bay Window Camper, Tax Exempt Afterowning this van for nearly 12 years now the kids are older have decided tosell her, its taken months on indecision but its now time to pass on theownership of the camper to new home. Afterbuying this in 2005 did the basics to take this from an un-used bare van toback on the road with new mot and mechanically very good and solid, then over10 years of this being my daily driver commuter and holiday camper decided totake her off the road and do all those niggly jobs had put off and turn herback into proper camper again. Bodywork: Last yearI stripped her down to rolling shell fitted new front wheel arches, nearside, offside outer sills, rear wheel arches and numerous small repairs in theinner sills, copious amounts of rust proof paint inside box sections newengine lid hinge panel and rear valance.Underneathshe is rock solid and has been treated and chassis painted, luckily the van wasin good condition underneath when bought her so no major work was required. She hashad new front panel, battery trays, rear lower corners and brand new VWfront doors since have owned her so is good solid van. After allthe welding and bodywork was done sprayed the van in my garage with cellulosepaint, the plan was to save up and get the van professionally re-sprayed lateron. Althoughthe van looks clean, straight and shiny close up its not perfect, not showwinner but defiantly nothing to be embarrassed about. The donkey work has beendone on this so wouldn’t take long for body-shop to tidy it up and get anicer shiny paint finish and shouldn’t cost the earth should you choose to getit done. Personally would run with it, get some holidays in and if you wantget it done in the winter you never know you might want to change the colourby then anyway. I amalways overly critical of anything do and any vehicle we own so come take alook at the van in person and see what you think. Engine: The enginein this originally has had complete strip down, new bearings, gaskets andseals. New barrels and pistons and cylinder heads thoroughly cleaned and crack/ leak tested, yet more gaskets and seals and valves set. The carburettorhas been thoroughly stripped and cleaned with new gaskets, bushes etc.I havefitted an electronic ignition kit, and all the leads, plugs and coil werefitted recently. The heatexchangers are in good condition and exhaust solid which is monza tip. RunningGear: Before Igot this mot’d again replaced drive shaft gaitors, rear brake cylinders, balljoint’s and boots, stripped and refurbished the front brake callipers,re-greased the front axle beam so all the steering brakes and suspension partsare in great shape all tyres have good even tread and she brakes upstraight so next mot should be breeze. Interior: Theinterior is where allot of time and money has been spent, when first got thisvan in 2005 it was bare inside, no seats, carpet or roof linings in the back.I riggedup basic rear seat setup and carpet and have run it like that for over 10years.Last yearafter painted the entire van set about making practical interior withgood size bed and ability to sleep adults and small children in roofbunk. Afterfitting new wooden floor base and insulating inside panels with foilbubble-wrap insulation made the long side unit to give plenty of storage, then made rock roll bed using recycled futon bed hinges, these work reallywell, nice easy action and take up allot less room than the off the shelf onesyou get so you end up with more useable storage. The bed isabout 6ft long and wide enough for adults to sleep and not be cramped.Lastly Imade buddy seat for extra storage and make this seater van.I have notfitted any rear seatbelts to this as legally it is not required but there arenumerous fixings in the floor, side panels etc and off the shelf kits availableshould you wish to get this done yourselves. There is arear overhead cupboard for yet more storage and loads of room underneath therear seat bed and cubby hole in the spare wheel recess in the boot, thelong unit has curtained pockets which go full length of the unit. As theoriginal Devon conversion bunks were long gone by the time got the van madea framework inside to support the bunk and using sturdy wood and metal supportshave bunk wide enough for kids that will easily take there weight and thencovered in white vinyl underside and carpeted top side.Ipurchased set of cnc cut complete door card set and front roof lining, acouple of rolls black and white vinyl we made all new door cards and rooflinings throughout giving the interior nice clean look. All thefoam for the rear seats is new and my wife recovered it all in nice patternedmaterial and found some matching cushions then new complete curtain set andcarpet so interior looks great and smells nice and new.I havekept the original Devon conversion bunkbrackets and side covers and include them in the sale in case you want to getthe van back to original and find some original bunks somewhere. Theoriginal concertina style Devon roof pop top skirt was in poor state so mywife has made new skirt out of heavy duty blue canvas which looks great andstrong and then we stuck some white vinyl to the outside roof top and sealed itin to eliminate common issue with the Devon pop top which has allot of rivetsthat wear over time and causes roof leak.A new poptop skylight has been fitted. Once theinterior was complete we purchased new burner grill gas cooker and a12v/240v cooler cool-box, re-used some recycled wine crates for added storagein the cupboards for cutlery and cookware and one for the small gas bottles. The cooleris basic fan cooling model, didn’t want to cut any holes in the side of thevan for gas fridge vent so just went for new but basic fridge style cooler, whenever we go on camping holidays we always used chest style way campingfridge in separate food prep tent as am not fan of gas fridges in smallspace of van permanently on while you sleep. There isan all new leisure electric system fitted with new battery, sockets and wiring,I fitted some 12v sockets in the cubbyhole behind curtain so you can chargephones etc and have them tucked away out of sight. In the cabwe have fitted new carpet and another storage box between the front seats, upgraded the windscreen washers to be an electric push button style, new frontseat belts and kept the front seats originally fitted when first got itback on the road but fitted new seat covers. The seats fitted are from late90’s Mazda 323 and so much more comfortable and adjustable than the originals. GeneralItems: During therebuild process of this van allot of new parts have been fitted the ones canremember are listed below. New frontdoor ¼ window framesAll fixedglass rubber seals replacedNew glovebox linerHot startrelay kitNewignition switch electricsNew frontdoor handlesNew frontdoor grab handlesNew Cabdoor mirrorsNewsliding door external and internal handleNew frontand rear number-platesNew frontpanel aerialNewsliding door bracket and bushes I canguarantee there is allot more parts have forgotten about or lost the receiptsfor as well.Generalinfo: I havechecked through the vans paper work and don’t have all the previous mot’sonly dating back to march 25th 2009 so missing couple of years.Themileage back to that mot was 31327 and is currently 38728 so its only done 7401miles in years, since its last mot on 29th June 2016 its done only4 miles as it was too late in the season to sell the van after had done allthe interior work covered it up and haven’t used it much since. The vancomes with Volkswagen Birth Certificate which shows the van was built on 15thSeptember 1972 and left the factory on 22nd September 1972. The vancomes with Maypole breathable cover which with the roof rack off will keepthis van protected when not in use. Insurancefor this van for me and my wife driving valued at £14,000 fully comprehensivewith European breakdown recovery 6000 mile limit is only £135 year  This vanis structurally very very solid, mechanically its all up together and is prettymuch ready to load up and go on holiday in.I wouldrecommend having your own mechanic check it over and also get it tuned up, Ican do almost everything competently on old vw’s but am no good at tuning themup. As longtime air cooled vw fanatical family would recommend coming out and having agood look round our van in the flesh, also go and take look at few othersas there is huge difference in all the different styles quality of workdone and prices. This van is close to 45 years old and has had extensive workcarried out but all old VW’s need regular attention to be kept at therereliable and robust best. With atune up would happily jump in this van and drive over 200 miles down to Cornwall for holidayand not be paranoid on the drive down and know could have comfortable staywhile down there.   As seemsto common with internet selling of vehicles would like to state will notrespond to ridiculously low offers, will only accept offers in person andagain not massive drop off of the asking price. I willconsider part exchange deal on this but with limitations, vehicle to partexchange must be an early VW and valued no more than 30% of the asking price ofthis van.I wouldconsider part exchange with cash my way on something like VW 25, T4, BeachBuggy, Baja, Fastback, Variant, projects will be considered. have had far toomany stock beetles and have Karmann Ghia so not interested in either of thoseas PX.  Paymentfor the van must be cash on collection, we are located in small village nearFaringdon in Oxfordshire, close to the Oxfordshire, Wiltshire Gloucestershireborder and 20 minutes away from the M4 Junction 14 and 15.If youpurchase the van and want it collected and dropped off can recommend localguy who is fully insured and does this service anywhere in the uk andgood rates.
I have uploaded every picture have of the van to my flickr account and they can be viewed here  https://www.flickr.com/photos/141690412@N02/albums/72157681685858226  , there is mixture of the van being worked on, on holiday and as it is now. If yourequire any more information not covered in the wall of text above then pleaseemail me and will be glad to help. I amcurrently working from home so can be around at flexible times for viewingsweekdays.
