1964 AIRSTREAM SAFARI DOUBLE 22'**ADDITIONAL PICTURES AFTER DESCRIPTION**
If you're looking for an Airstream project with tons of potential, this is the one. Very complete, original 1964 Airstream Safari that's 22 feet long. This particular model is double, so the couch at the front and the seating area across from the kitchen both turn into double beds. Includes all of the original cabinetry, fixtures, appliances, systems, and bathroom. This trailer is great candidate for restoration. These earlier Airstream trailers are becoming harder to come by and the styling of these are superb.
EXTERIORBody is very straight with no major dents or damage where it counts. Some rock damage and dent on the underpinning at the front of the trailer, as well some small tears and curling on one fender. The trailer has had preliminary polish, but can be detail polished more to remove additional imperfections if desired. The vent cover for the bathroom is missing, as well as the vent cover over the living area. previous owner put plexiglass over the living area vent and secured it down, which seems to be holding up fine. All glass is intact, though some window cranks might need to be replaced or worked on.
INTERIOROriginal, original, original! All of the cabinetry is present, but will need some work. Most of the cabinet fronts are in decent condition and can likely be brought back to life with some sanding and finishing, but others will need to be replaced. Sometime in the 90s clunky sound system was installed in the cabinets above the couch. Holes were cut into the cabinet fronts for the speakers and controls. The sound system was too heavy for the space and subsequently loosened the cabinets and broke piece of the vertical frame. There is some water damage at the base of the kitchen cabinets and the bed across from the kitchen.
Kitchen contains all original components, including double sink, stove/oven, and refrigerator. garbage disposal was installed under the sink and does turn on, but we did not test it by putting anything down the drain.
Upholstery will need to be redone. The front sleeping/hang out area has the original cushions, but the foam is dried out and fabric is falling apart. The couch is single unit design that folds up and down in one piece when converting between bed and couch. Original curtains had deteriorated from the sun.
The divider between the living area and the bathroom is in nice condition. The bathroom itself has lots of great space for storage. The surfaces of the toilet, sink, and bathtub all show signs of wear and have staining from use over the years. Toilet includes cover that makes the area bench when not in use.
As for the floor, it is mostly solid. There is some deterioration at the threshold, which is not uncommon for these trailers. Otherwise it feels strong throughout. At some point linoleum floor was put on top of the original flooring. Both layers were in poor condition and could not be saved, but some of the original tiles were left in place near the couch in case buyer was interested in matching what was there originally.
SYSTEMSElectrical outlets are working, but we did not change out bulbs to test the fixtures. Water system needs repair. Everything drains fine, but there are hoses leaking when water is connected. Propane system has not been tested. AC unit has thermostat that is operational. The fan comes on and runs, but it needs to be serviced. To the best of our knowledge, everything is original and intact.
TOWINGTrailer has two brand new tires. The lights do not work and will either need temporary towing lights or be repaired for trip. Otherwise the trailer is solid and ready to be towed to its new home.
OVERALL CONDITION NOTESTrailer has been in Arizona, which has hot, dry climate. This means that rust is rarely problem and we found no mold or dampness in the trailer. This also means that some materials will dry out over the years. The windows will need new seals. The rubbery trim around the cabinets in the bathroom, the kitchen, and also the trim around the countertops have contracted and will need replacing. This is project trailer that needs work to make it ready for comfortable travel or living. It is not perfect, but has great bones and has the potential to be stunning trailer.
